Key Events

Several key events take place throughout early pregnancy which are crucial stages in the development of the embryo. These include sex determination in which the gender is determined, fertilisation in which the sperm and egg fuse, implantation in which the blastocyst embeds itself into the endometrium, gastrulation in which the foetal cells reorganise to form the germ layers, neurulation in which the nervous system forms, and organ development.
